Oltre La Corsa - Book

“I decided to take pen and paper and tell what the Giir di Mont has meant to me over the years…”
Fazzini Filippo
Author

The story of a race hosted by a small village in the province of Lecco, told by the person who contributed most to its growth: Filippo Fazzini.

The Giir di Mont can be considered one of the very first skyruns, born as a bet in 1961 and grown exponentially since the beginning of the new millennium. In 2017, it even hosted two Mountain Running World Championships.

In between, 18 “modern” editions have established it among the most prestigious mountain running races at both national and international levels.

“Giir di Mont – Beyond the Race” documents a journey of passion built through the determination, skills, and collaborative spirit of an entire village: Premana.

Rich in traditions, it has preserved its dialect, traditional costumes, religious festivals, and the ancient “past,” summer celebrations held in the alpine pastures. The surrounding territory offers forests, pastures, and numerous hiking routes. The eleven alpine pastures (“Mont”), once used for cattle grazing, are now mainly summer retreats, maintaining a historic local rivalry. Premana is renowned for its entrepreneurial spirit and is identified with the Collective Quality Brand “PREMANA.”

Prefaces by Massimo Sanelli (President of the Associazione Sportiva Premana) and by the Catalan phenomenon Kilian Jornet Burgada.

The book is also available at “Sabidea” by Fazzini Sabina (Premana).

RUN2GETHER

In 2007, the partnership between an Austrian club and a Kenyan one evolved into the creation of Run2gether, a team that approaches the world of high-level running without neglecting the cultural and social values inherent in sports. It’s a way to be together, run together, and above all, to gain a deeper understanding of each other’s daily life and culture.

Through Africa&Sport and the encounter with Marco Rampi, a collaboration was born between Giir di Mont and Run2gether, enabling support to be sent tothe children of Kiambogo, the Kenyan village where the team’s training center is located — thanks to the participation of its top athletes in the Premana competition.

Over the years, the friendship between Giir di Mont and Run2gether has grown through meetings and outreach initiatives that have promoted solidarity projects, such as collecting used running shoes later shipped to Kiambogo.

The goal is to keep nurturing the dreams of young children, inspired by those who have already managed to change their lives through the wonderful world of sports.

In February 2019, we decided to send to Kenya some sportswear from past editions of the Giir di Mont that had remained in storage. Since 2020, the Giir di Mont Committee has been sponsoring a 7-year-old boy named Victor Kamau Wairimu, who lives in Kiambogo, through a long-distance adoption.

Run2gether indeed offers the possibility to sponsor a child from Kiambogo, with a special feature: each sponsored child is assigned a tutor, one of the team’s runners, who personally delivers the financial aid collected to the child’s family.

On a sporting level, one of the team’s most emotional moments is linked precisely to Premana: Lucy Murigi, an athlete from Run2gether, won the 2017 Mountain Running World Championship on the trails of Premana.

At the heart of Run2gether’s social project is a small kindergarten, built with the prize money from the athletes’ first victories and the help of sponsors. Today, 300 children (mostly orphans) attend the school for free, where they receive their first basic education.

Run2gether athletes run for this too — to lay the foundations for a better future.

The author: Filippo Fazzini

Born and raised in the small village of Premana (LC), like many of his fellow villagers, he is an artisan in the scissor-making trade.
A lifelong enthusiast of endurance sports, he built an amateur athletic career by taking part in numerous running and cross-country skiing competitions.
When injuries forced him to hang up his shoes, he remained close to the sporting world and chose to take an active role in organizing his hometown race: the Giir di Mont.
More than 20 years later, at the end of a journey of personal and professional growth, he decided to collect the stories and memories of this experience in “Giir di Mont – Beyond the Race.”
