The Giir di Mont was born as a bet among friends, with a route connecting the 12 mountain pastures of Premana.
The name, which in the local dialect means “tour of the pastures,” reflects the intent to highlight the mountain territory.
Premana, the last village of Valvarrone with about 2,300 inhabitants, is a characteristic mountain town nestled among its peaks. Its historic center preserves a medieval layout with narrow streets and frescoed houses. For centuries, its economy has been linked to ironworking—once for weapons and today for utensils such as scissors and knives, now exported worldwide.
Rich in traditions, it has preserved its dialect, traditional costumes, religious festivals, and the ancient “past,” summer celebrations held in the alpine pastures. The surrounding territory offers forests, pastures, and numerous hiking routes. The eleven alpine pastures (“Mont”), once used for cattle grazing, are now mainly summer retreats, maintaining a historic local rivalry. Premana is renowned for its entrepreneurial spirit and is identified with the Collective Quality Brand “PREMANA.”

After years of intermittent editions, the sports club A.S. Premana relaunched the race, laying the foundations for its modern format.
To attract more runners, the Mini Giir di Mont was introduced — a shorter and less demanding route that avoids the toughest sections while keeping the spirit of the race.
Premana hosted Mountain Running World Championships, giving the Giir di Mont international recognition and confirming its status among the world’s top mountain races.
