The History of Giir di Mont

The Giir di Mont is one of the most iconic mountain running races in the Alpine scene.

Born in the heart of Premana, this event represents a perfect blend of sport, tradition, and local heritage, attracting athletes and enthusiasts every year from all over Italy and abroad.

Premana

Premana, the last village of Valvarrone with about 2,300 inhabitants, is a characteristic mountain town nestled among its peaks. Its historic center preserves a medieval layout with narrow streets and frescoed houses. For centuries, its economy has been linked to ironworking—once for weapons and today for utensils such as scissors and knives, now exported worldwide.
Rich in traditions, it has preserved its dialect, traditional costumes, religious festivals, and the ancient “past,” summer celebrations held in the alpine pastures. The surrounding territory offers forests, pastures, and numerous hiking routes. The eleven alpine pastures (“Mont”), once used for cattle grazing, are now mainly summer retreats, maintaining a historic local rivalry. Premana is renowned for its entrepreneurial spirit and is identified with the Collective Quality Brand “PREMANA.”

The course: between effort and tradition

The Giir di Mont unfolds along a technical and demanding course that winds through the historic alpine pastures of Premana, linking trails, meadows, and high-altitude sections.

It’s not just any race: the constant alternation of climbs and descents, the varied terrain, and the altitude make this competition a real challenge even for the most experienced athletes.

But it is precisely this toughness that makes it unique: every kilometer tells the story of the land and its heritage.

History of the race

An international-level race

Over the years, the Giir di Mont has grown into a benchmark event for mountain running.

The participation of top-level athletes and competitors from various countries has helped strengthen the race’s reputation.

The most significant moment came in 2017, when Premana hosted the Mountain Running World Championships, bringing the Giir di Mont into the international spotlight.

Behind the Giir di Mont, there is an entire community.

Every year, hundreds of volunteers work together to make the event possible, from preparing the course to managing aid stations and ensuring safety.

Their commitment represents one of the most authentic elements of the race, keeping alive the original spirit based on passion, collaboration, and a deep connection to the land.

The Giir di Mont is not just run: it is experienced.
